I got an invitation to play in today’s 2011 G/Tour of Globe Business at Alta Vista Golf and Country and thought it would be another of those tournaments, but when I got wind of the tournament format via email yesterday, I realized that this one is definitely going to be very interesting.
First, the event is going to me a four-man team scramble. This means that all players hit tee shots and then the group selects the best from among them and the player whose ball is picked plays it as it lies. The three other team members will place their balls within one club length from where the selected ball is, but no nearer the hole.
The process of choosing the best ball and hitting shots will continue until the ball is holed out.
Since there are some players, who have mastered the art of hitting tee shots, the tournament also requires that at least two tee shots of each player must be selected for the entire round.
To make it even more interesting, there is also the sliding tee box. This simply means that a team can tee off from one tee box forward or backward depending on the score. The team tees off from the same tee box for a par, but can move forward for a bogey or worse and backward for a birdie or better.
The organizers will select the members of the team and will do their best to have an even field. Players were asked to submit their handicaps when they confirmed their participation.
If you think that is already interesting, there are also fun or gimmick holes and players have to follow what is required like tee off using only the pitching wedge on the par-3 2nd hole and driving you ball into the sandtrap on the long par-4 5th. There are many more holes that require special actions that seem to make the event more interesting.
It’s not very often that we get to have tournaments like this in Cebu, so see you at Alta Vista this morning.
