Central Visayas leaps to 2nd place

DAPITAN CITY , Philippines  – In a rather surprising twist of event, Central Visayas jumped from fourth to second place in the penultimate day of the 54th Palarong Pambansa yesterday here at the Jose P. Rizal Memorial State University (JRMSU) Sports Complex.

Central Visayas accumulated a total of 95 points, trailing National Capital Region with 109 points while Region VI.

Lawn Tennis

Making her final bow in the annual athletic meet, Sally Mae Siso saved her best for last to spearhead CV's championship campaign in the secondary girls lawn tennis at Dakak tennis courts.

Siso and Hanna Espinosa had to pass through a heart-stopping match before getting rid of Region XII’s Jzash Canja and Marigold Nagret in come-from-behind fashion, 8-6.

“I’m very happy and overwhelmed with the feat we have in my last Palaro. Nakasiyagit gud ko sa last point, pressured kaayo mi nagduwa kay naggukod gyud mi sa among kontra. Luckily, we were able to make it," said Siso.

The secondary boys squad also secured the doubles title after Dan Cinco and Janel Troy Pintor pummeled Kiko Alcantara and Al Michael Madreo from Region 10 in the finals, 8-5. However, they only ranked second overall.

Football

The elementary and secondary football squads advanced into the championship yesterday at the Barcelona National High School field.

The Mario Ceniza-mentored elementary team thrashed Western Visayas, 4-2, in the semis courtesy of two goals from team captain Enzo Ceniza and one from Lendon Colina.

However, Ceniza wept into tears after he was issued three yellow cards that earned him an automatic one-game suspension.

“They will be playing without the team captain. He cried after the game because he was not expecting that it will happen. There are lot of faulty calls during the game, walay klarong decisions. I just told Enzo, that even if he will not be playing, he should continue to inspire his team mates in the championships,” said Ceniza.

In the secondary division, the CV booters blanked region IX, 2-0, in the semis behind the efforts of Miguel Caindic and Jovan Bacus

Boxing And Arnis

The CV boxers and stick-fighters contributed two golds apiece. Rhezon Tarona and Junreil Jimenez reigned supreme in different weight division to get their first Palaro gold medals in boxing at the Gallera de Dapitan.

Tarona of Don Gerardo Ouano Memorial National High School overpowered the towering NCR boxer, while Jimenez of Abellana National School triumphed in the 42 kgs. class against a pug from Region X.

Maximo Caballes Jr. and Andro Rey Piencenaves secured two gold medals in arnis at the RMI Covered Court. Caballes lorded it over in the 52-55 kgs., while Piencenaves dominated in the 43-47 kgs.

Archery

Over at the ZN Sports Complex Archery Range, Sebastian Teves, Nino Montejo, Romeo Betache and Churt Lozano secured the gold in team match play with 195 points.

Gymnastics

Jimi Campomanes got another gold in floor exercise and bronze in the vault of the Men’s Artistic Gymnastics at the Polanco Municipal Gymnasium.

In the elementary Women’s Artistic Gymnastics, Francin Ly Coyoca took a silver medal in floor exercise, while Dianne Sophia Navarro had a bronze in the balance beam.

Table Tennis

The CV paddlers added two more golds and a lone silver and bronze courtesy of the boys elementary and secondary teams at the Zanorte Teacher’s Gym.

Dannel Jay Tormis clinhed gold in the secondary boys singles, while Jann Mari Nayre bagged the elementary boys singles title.

Swimming And Athletics

The CV swimmers and tracksters ended the week-long sports conclave with silver and bronze.

At the JRMSU aquatic center, Antonnie Villahermosa, Ian Jan Philip Docabo, Tristan Kirk Ebon,

Michael Ichiro Kong got the silver medal in the 4x50m freestyle relay. Their girls counterparts only settled for bronze courtesy of Emma Alexandrite Duroy, Karen Mae Indaya, Lyh Ann Navarro, Razel Cabajar.

At the JRMSU track oval, 400m gold medalist Anfernee Lopena from Bohol added one silver in the 200m event, while the 4x100m meter relay tracksters ended up with a silver in the secondary boys event.

In girls volleyball, three-time Palarong Pambansa champion Catmon Elementary School marched into the final. (FREEMAN NEWS)
