CEBU, Philippines - Central Visayas tanker Loren Dale Echavez of the University of San Carlos (USC) bagged five gold medals in swimming event during Day 2 of the Philippine Collegiate Games yesterday at the Quirino Enriquez Sports Complex in Zamboanga City.
Echavez reigned supreme in the 200m freestyle with a time of two minutes and 15 seconds and in the 50m free, breaking her personal record with a 27.67 seconds clocking. She also dominated the 100m and 800m freestyle and anchored the 4x50 freestyle relay team to a golden glory.
Echavez’s teammate Abegail Sakib chipped in one gold in the 200m backstroke, a silver in the 400m individual medley and two bronzes in the 50m and 100m backstroke.
Jesse Arriola, also from USC, had two silvers in the 1,500m freestyle and 400m individual medley, while Claudine Candia added silver in the 100m butterfly and bronze in the 200m fly.
Athletics
Decorated trackster Mary Joy Tabal of Southwestern University (SWU) ruled the 5,000 m run.
Irin Baluran of the University of Cebu settled for silver in long jump event with a distance of 5.31m, while her teammate Dharl Pitogo ended 110-meter hurdles at the second place with a time of 15.7 seconds.
Volleyball
Men’s defending champion University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) is now a few steps closer in securing a semifinal ticket after keepin its unbeaten record intact.
USJ-R thrashed Region 8, 25-13, 25-15, 25-18 and then fended off ARMM, 25-15, 25-18, 25-23.
The Spiking Jaguars ended the day outclassing Caraga region bets, 25-15, 25-14, 25-22.
Lawn Tennis
The Central Visayas men’s squad bagged the overall championship after pummeling the Calabarzon netters. RJ Abarquez topped the singles event, 8-0, while Kennex Abadia and Jade Labaya secured the doubles crown.
In the distaff side, CV is good only for a silver after bowing to Davao.
The Siso siblings Sallydine and Bernardine booked championship tickets in the singles individual event after hurdling their respective semifinal assignments.
Sallydine routed Calabarzon, 8-5, while Bernardine beat Western Visayas, 8-3. They will face next Davao bets in the finals today. - BANAT NEWS
