San Roque Ball Club launches inaugural season
CEBU, Philippines - The newly-formed San Roque Ball Club (SRBC) kicked off its inaugural season billed as "1st SRBC Summer Basketball League" last Sunday with seven teams participating at the San Roque Sports Complex.
The names of the contending squads are patterned after that of the NBA teams namely Heat, Celtics, Spurs, Lakers, Magic, Bulls and Knicks.
Barangay councilor and league commissioner Duke Espina said they will play in a single round robin format every Sunday, with the top two finishers at the elimination round automatically fighting it out for the championship in a knockout affair.
The SRBC, presently headed by Nonoy Dumon, is open to all bonafide residents of Brgy. San Roque aged 25 years old and above. They hold regular practice twice a week on Wednesdays and Fridays from 9 pm onwards.
"We are forming the San Roque Ball Club to provide the older ones an avenue to keep themselves physically fit and maintain a healthy lifestyle, for the youth to stay away from illegal vices, and overall to promote fellowship among the residents of our barangay," said Espina.
The maiden SRBC offering enjoys the all-out support of Cebu City Mayor Michael L. Rama, who graced the opening ceremony, and the entire San Roque barangay council under the dynamic leadership of Brgy. Capt. Roger Ruizo in partnership with the Sanggunian Kabataan (SK) led by chairman Stephen Tapulado. (FREEMAN)
