UV pugs shine in Summit boxfest

CEBU, Philippines - Three out of five entries of the University of the Visayas (UV) emerged victorious in the latest edition of the 2011 Summit Natural Drinking Water Amateur Boxing Series the other night at the Pulangbato Sports Complex.

As expected, Dan Lou Codilla won against teammate Robert Labanza, 3-0,in the 52 kgs. class.

Little-known Rie Muñez also proved his worth to UV after posting a 3-0 victory against Cabancalan National High School’s Wendel Acharon in the other 52 kgs. duel, while Robert Etorma, pulled away a 2-1 triumph over Jan Ivor Lastrilla of Camotes Island in ther 57 kgs.

Christian Apawan was not as lucky though as he bowed to Butuan’s Mark Bernaldez in the 60 kgs. category.

On the other hand, the Philippine-Australian Boxing Club ended with an even 2-2 win-loss card. 30 kgs. Joebert Cabaluna silenced Banilad’s Jin Gabriel Besinga and Rhezon Tarona dumped Flores Boxing Club’s Janriel Jecong in the 41 kgs. division.

Bacayan Elementary School’s 33 kgs. bet Dominique Castañares proved too much for PABC’s Bebe Rama, while Raul Tarona lost to Ariel Sibay in the 34 kgs. class.

46 kgs. Kevin Jake Cataraja became Cabancalan's saving grace after taming Christian Bacolod.

Aside from Acharon, the other Cabancalan entry Jonathan Francisco fell prey to Maramag’s Rolando Lingaw-lingaw, 2-1.

Toledo’s Rhiyan Canillas went away with a 2-1 win over Antique’s Mark Andre Acub in the 62 kgs. category, while Consolacion’s Ritchie Montealto overpowered Maguikay’s Cherwellan Cantel, 3-0, in the 46 kgs. division. (FREEMAN)
