Cokaliong nails second win in EC

CEBU, Philippines - Cokaliong Shipping Lines (CSL) and B-Meg/San Carlos Boys’ High Alumni Basketball Association (SCBHABA) scored contrasting wins at the resumption of the Seniors’ Executive Cup 2011 at the City Sports Club Cebu. CSL outscored Club Monday, 85-77, while B-Meg/SCBHABA nipped Mandaue Jaycees, 67-64.

CSL struck hard from the start, taking a lead 50-33 at halftime and 67-47 point lead after three quarters. The duo of Julius Gastador and Opel Cabaltera led the offense, taking over when team owner Chester Cokaliong went cold.

Cokaliong then found his range from three-point land when the two slowed down. Club Monday threatened to rally in the fourth quarter with Gilbert Demape scoring 12 straight points in a 12-4 run but the closest they could get was at 81-73. Gastador led CSL with 20 points while Cabaltera added 16. Cokaliong had five triple for 15 points. Demape led Club Monday with 25.

In the other game, B-Meg/SCBHABA leaned on Lou Regidor and Bing Pua’s end-game split free throws and an insurance lay-up to score a nail-biting win. Tied at 63-all, Pua split his charities for 64-63 lead with 30 seconds left. Regidor added another free throw for a 65-63 lead with 17 seconds left.

 Abe Galinato was then fouled and had the chance to tie the game with 9 seconds remaining, but he also split his charities to cut the lead to 65-64. Rhett Latonio grabbed the offensive rebound but missed on a turnaround fade-away jumper that would’ve given Mandaue Jaycees the lead. B-Meg/SCBHABA controlled the rebound and found Pua streaking downcourt for a lay-up and the final score.

Regidor led a balanced B-Meg/SCBHABA attack with 16 points. He was supported by Dindo Sausa’s 12. Galinato led Mandaue Jaycees with 25.

The Seniors’ Executive Cup 2011, a tournament for players 35 years old and above is a revival of the original Executive Cup of 2003-2005 and Pacman Cup of 2007.
