P156T at stake in Great Lapu-Lapu Run

CEBU, Philippines - A total of P156,000 in cash prize is at stake for the 3rd Great Lapu-Lapu Run set on April 17 in Lapu-Lapu City.

Aside from that, the top Filipino male and female runners in the 21K category will be sent to this year’s Singapore Marathon late this year.

An incentive scheme for Lapu-Lapu residents who will make it to the top 10 in any of the race lengths (3K, 10K and 21K) is also being considered.

Meanwhile, despite some glitches that beset the staging of the Great Lapu-Lapu Run for the past two years, the organizers of the event assured that the third edition of the annual race will be smooth-sailing.

For this year, organizers tapped the Sports and Fitness Enthusiasts (SAFE) led by Joel Baring to handle the technical side of the contest, with John Pages and Mayrick Jacalan’s Sprint timer for the timing chip.

Baring admitted that they have not yet used the Sprint timing chips, but assured runners that in case of hitches in the recording of time, a back-up timer to be made available.

A new route will also be utilized passing through and below the Marcelo Fernan bridge as well as part of the Mactan International airport.

The event is part of Lapu-Lapu City government’s preparation for the Tri 113 in December.

The Tri 113 is an international triathlon competition involving swimming, biking and running.

Through the GLLR, councilor Harry Radaza is expecting that runners will be teaming up with cyclists and swimmers and form a relay team for the Tri 113.

Aside from the run, there’s also the Olango Challenge, an open water race, set in April and a cycling competition late this to support Radaza’s aim.

Registration for the run will begin this Monday and end on April 15 at the Lapu-Lapu City Tourism Cultural and Historical Affairs Commission and at Runnr in Ayala Center-Cebu. Entry fee is pegged at P250 for 5K and 10K runners and P450 for the 21K.   (FREEMAN NEWS)
