Tired

FULL POINT - Nimrod NL Quiñones -

"It's over fatigue, you have to rest."

So said my doctor yesterday afternoon when I went for consultation due to body malaise and for feeling feverish the past few days.

Aside from complete bed rest, I was advised to turn off my cellular phones and stay away from the personal computer. I told her that I would be more stressed if I'll shut them all down, but my doctor did not seem too happy with my reply.

Well, here I am working on my column in bed. So much for a complete bed rest, but I guess the heat of the weekend sports activities have eventually taken their toll on my aging body.

I bet many of those who also went to the games of the Davis Cup at Plantation Bay Resort and Spa and also the XTerra in Liloan are suffering from the same symptoms.

It was a rare opportunity to have such events in our own backyard, so despite lack of sleep and temperatures that could cause sunburn I found time to be there.

The hosting of the Davis Cup proved that indeed the City of Lapu-Lapu is ready to host such kind of international event.

Although there were minor kinks, I believe that it was something that many Cebuanos, tennis players and non-players alike, enjoyed.

Nothing beats cheering for your country's team. It was just unfortunate that the Philippines could not match the power of Japan.

Cecil Mamiit was quite emotional after losing his singles match last Sunday. You can't blame the guy for feeling such as he lost in front of his countrymen.

That was not, however, the end of his tennis playing career and as the Japanese team said, they be happy to help hook him up with sponsors to allow our Filipino ace to further hone his skills.

In tennis, you have to play against the best to keep on improving. This is the reason why the best players in our tennis clubs often fall prey to lesser known players in big tournaments.

The XTerra, on the other hand, was another experience. It was the first time that we hosted a triathlon where the bike and the run segments were held in an off-road setting.

It was a different experience for the participants themselves and I heard many of them say that it was wonderful, but they would need to practice the off-road biking and running in order to be more competitive.

There were also a few things that organizers might consider in the future like limiting the access of the audience to certain areas and providing more booths for food and refreshments so that the people there would also be well fed and well hydrated.

It was the first one and there is so much room for improvement in the future.   I hope that a similar event would be held soon considering that no less than Liloan Mayor Vincent Franco 'Duke' Frasco, who joined the relay event, seems to have enjoyed it so much.

Maybe Liloan can be the haven for off-road triathlons like the XTerra and I'm sure the town officials would be looking into that possibility.
