E-GUV to kick off in Dalaguete

- Marigold Lebumfacil -

CEBU, Philippines - After some delay due to the plea of other Local Government Units for them to be given the ample time to prepare, the Expanded-Governor Gwen Garcia Unity Volleyball (E-GUV) will finally push through this weekend in Dalaguete.

Cebu Volleyball Association (CEVA) co-chairman and E-GUV author Glenn Anthony Soco, said they already had the team since last month but some LGUs asked for another time extension so they can gather participants for the training.

“We were already prepared since last month. We already had the team to facilitate the training and seminars. It’s just that some LGUs asked us for an extension so that they could gather their participants for the training,” said Soco.

During the provincial development councils meeting, Gov. Gwen Garcia requested all the mayors to allocate funding on the volleyball program and they gave their commitment to the governors’ proposal.

“The mayors were there and they showed their support and commitment since volleyball is already an established sport all over the province because of the GUV Cup,” said Soco.

They will start the training on the different aspects of volleyball to all the participants, which also include coaching, organizing tournaments and even physical nutrition.

CEVA already plotted schedules for the training and they had the timeline to finish it midway this year, which is very timely since the GUV Cup will start on September.

“We will encourage the LGUs to implement these in the grassroots level and to come up with their own local volleyball tournament like inter-barangay but we could not proceed with the other aspects if they will not be trained well,” Soco said.

“We do expect that after these trainings, more competitive teams will be seen in the GUV Cup this year if the LGUs will seriously implement these to the grassroots level,” he added.

E-GUV will not only target the LGUs but also the Department of Education, which already confirmed its commitment to send representatives for the training.

“E-GUV indeed has a wider scope. This will not only ensure that E-GUV will be done in the local government level but also with the Department of Education, since this is part of their mandate to develop sports,” he said.

The E-GUV will feature trainings and seminars in relation to playing skills, coaching and officiating.

Soco said the goals of E-GUV include the systematic organization, which ensures that the programs that will be set by the provincial government, CEVA and PVF will be implemented and that the standards of the rules of the game will be properly followed.

The program would be CEVA’s way of discovering younger generation of volleyball players and creating a process for the establishment of volleyball organization in each municipality. (FREEMAN)
