P50T at stake in Aznar chessfest

CEBU, Philippines - A total of P50,000 in cash prize is at stake for the top finishers of the 1st Bombi Aznar Memorial Open Chess Tournament set this weekend at the Elizabeth (E)-Mall Activity Center.

The champion will take home P20,000, while the second placer will receive P10,000. The third and fourth will pocket P5,000 and P3,000, respectively.

Those who will make it to the top 15 will get P1,000 each, while the top female and kiddie players will receive P500 apiece.

Registration fee is pegged at P300 for the open participants, P200 for students, and P100 for the ladies and kiddies.

Entry forms, which will be sent by e-mail upon request, are available at the Deep Blue Woodpusher’s Coffee at SM City and at the Colonnade Chess Club.

The deadline for the submission of entries will be not later than 9:30 am this Saturday. All participants shall play in one group only.        

The tournament follows the straight 9-round Swiss System format. In the event of tie, the direct encounter, buccholz, medial buccholz and progressive scoring system shall be applied.

The two-day tilt is staged in honor of the late National Master and Cebu Sports Hall of Famer Engr. Matias “Bombi” B. Aznar III.

It is organized by Rose Pharmacy Chess Club and supported by Southwest Finance Corp., Lapu-lapu Rural bank, Inc. and Rural Bank of Matag-ob (Leyte), Inc.
