Parties no, sports yes

While most people are probably jumping from one party to another this weekend and next week, I have decided to spend my time doing something else, which will also help me keep away from the high-cholesterol food. I promised myself to go to as many sports events as possible.

The events started yesterday with the fellowship of the Philippine Military Academy Alumni Association Inc. Lapu-Lapu Chapter. I only had a chance to take part in the golf fellowship, but there were basketball and badminton games later yesterday.

From the golf course, I rushed to the Cebu International Convention Center where the semifinals of the Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia Unity Volleyball (GUV) Cup were being played.

I caught three sets of the battle between Liloan and Mandaue, but had to leave to report to work.

The action continues today and everybody’s welcome to watch the best volleyball players from all over Cebu play.

Aside from the GUV Cup, a three-gun match dubbed as Mayor Jonas Cortes Shooting Tournament is also happening today at the NS Outdoor Firing Range in barangay Tawason, Mandaue City.

It’s quite tricky to get there if you are a first timer, but I’m sure there will be a lot of signs put up this weekend to guide those who want to go.

The range master for the event is my cousin Lowell Belarmino, who told me yesterday that Mayor Jonas will be there this 9:30 a.m. for the ceremonies.

The Mactan Island Golf Club, which always seems to have something new and better each time I visit, will be holding it’s Intra-club tournament today.

The concept of the event, according to Retired general Rodante Joya, the club’s GM, is to get the players who regularly play as a group to match their skills with those from other groups.

Each team is allowed to field seven players with the four best scores to count. General Joya said that they made the pairings in such a way that the players, who are regularly paired would have other playing partners. This is meant to further promote closer ties among the club members.

On Monday, the Thirsty Cup Tennis Tournament is opening simultaneously at the Cebu Country Club, Casino Español, and Baseline courts.

On Tuesday, the 8th Southern Junior Classic will tee off at the Cebu Country Club with players from other parts of the country set to participate.

The field in, however, limited to 100 participants and the tournament will run for two days.

By the way, the Eagle Run is also set tonight.

So, if you want to avoid pigging out, try going to the sports events instead.

If you’re too lazy to leave home for sports, tomorrow night, you can watch the Philippine national football team now better known as the Azkals play Indonesia in game 2 of their Asean Football Federation Suzuki Cup semifinals.

We need to beat the Indons by two goals to advance to the finals. Go Azkals!

The same goes to Han Kintanar, Christopher ‘Bong’ Castro, Emmanuel ‘Anol’ Mongaya, and Jay Montecillo.

Advance greetings go to Sarah Salera, Ernesto Gapasin, Nicole “Iverson” Lorenzana, Christy Manguerra, Ambec Javillo, and Rowena Gurrea-Sapad, who are turning a year older tomorrow.

Congratulations to the Costales family especially Virginia ‘Mama Gie’ and her daughter Carmela ‘Bem-bem’ on the opening of the Mama Gie Café along Ramos St.
