Tennis, football events today in Boljoon

- Caecent No-ot Magsumbol -

CEBU, Philippines - Before runners tackle an unfamiliar route in Boljoon, a football and tennis tournament will take place today at the history-rich southern town of Cebu.

Dubbed as Atty./Col. Napoleon Medida Sesante Tennis Invitational Memorial Cup, the tennis event is expected to see the likes of Bo Alburo, Nino Siso, Rj Abarquez, Kennex Abadia, Francis Largo, James and Oswaldo Dumoran and JunJun Cabrera going up against each other.

It will be an exciting battle to watch as the current varsity stars take on the former top players.

“ We initiated this tournament with the help of the Sesante family, Boljoon Sports Commission and Boljoon Heritage Foundation because we want to expose our local players in a high level of competition,” Boljoon tennis coordinator John Medida said.

Medida was a former tennis mainstay of the Cebu Institute of Technology (CIT) who at present devoted himself into training 40 aspiring Boljoanon netters aged eight to 15 years old.

The late lawyer and colonel Napoleon Medida Sesante, considered a town icon, was also an avid tennis fanatic. When he was still alive, the decorated police official envisioned to develop the sport among the youth in his beloved hometown.

Football, on the other hand, is going to be an inter-school action, with eight elementary schools taking part.

Former Don Bosco College varsity player Glenn Niere, who is spearheading the competition, hopes that they will be able to produce top football players as well as make the sport known to the different barangays on their town. (THE FREEMAN)
