CEBU, Philippines – Banking on their experience and competent reinforcements, Alcoy men and women's squads bagged the Cluster 2 titles in the 6th Governor Gwen Garcia Unity Vol-leyball (GUV) Cup the other day at Dumanjug Sports Complex.
Alcoy, spearheaded by the high-leaping Arnel Amadeo of Foundation University, completed a five-game sweep in the men's action.
The Clifford Cafe-mentored Alcoy spikers pummeled Dalaguete, 25-14, 25-12, Moalboal 25-17, 25-18, Ronda 25-17, 25-12, Dumanjug 25-19, 25-21 and Alegria via default.
Amadeo was strongly backed by Giovanni Devero, Roy Ulan and Renee Alessan-dro Leitz.
"Our reinforcements really played a vital role in winning this twin titles. We're hoping that with constant practice and determination to win, we could make it better in the quarterfinals," said Cafe, who was among those who powered Liloan to the municipal cluster championship last year.
Despite its lone setback against Alcoy , Moalboal still earned a quarterfinal ticket after taking the second spot.
In the distaff side, Cluster 2A champion Alcoy thrashed Cluster 2B titlist Alegria to snatch the Cluster 2 women's tiara.
The Alcoy belles powered by Ruby Rose Bordon of the University Negros Orien-tal-Recoletos and Girlie Jaro of Iloilo Doctors College handily beat Alegria, 25-12, 25-16. (FREEMAN)
