Alta Vista Jungolf Challenge

It is the time of the year again when the young golfers gather at Alta Vista Golf and Country Club for the 6th Junior Golf Challenge that tees off today and runs until Friday.

There will be individual and team competitions and participants will be classified by age - Special division (18 to 21 years old), A (15-17), B (13-14), C (11-12), D (9-10), and E (6-8). There will also be contests for the boys and girls categories.

Aside from the tournament, there will also be special competitions for putting, pitching and blasting out of a bunker.

Set to participate are players from Alabang, Camp Aguinaldo, Valley, Del Monte, Mimosa, Canlubang, Riviera, Zamboanga, Cebu Country Club, Mactan and host Alta Vista.

The event is backed by Julie's Franchise Corp., Jungolf Foundation of the Philippines, Selecta Ice Cream, Holiday in Seoul, Maintek Corp., Restoserve Marketing, Purcia Transport, General Milling, Pustahan Printers, EGL Nation Printing, BC Hortelano and Co., VG Star, Campaigns Cebu, and Coca-Cola.

In golf, kids are taught to be honest and to follow the rules. This is the same for sports in general, which is so unlike what happened in the Sangguniang Kabataan elections where there have been many reports of cheating.

If you want to train future leaders, get your child into sports and not into politics.

Michael Schumacher matched his best finish this season in the Korean Grand Prix last weekend where he finished fourth.

It was probably very lucky for the seven-time world champion, who came out of retirement, that the engine of the car of Red Bull's Sebastian Vettel went kaput in the closing laps.

The inaugural Korean GP made the race for the world championship even more interesting with Ferrari's Fernando Alonso seizing the title and the overall lead, but the battle is not over yet.

I have given up hope on seeing Schumacher, who is now racing for Mercedes, win a race, but I believe he still has a good chance of a podium finish if he gets the right breaks.

I did not get the chance to watch last Sunday's game live, but from what I caught in the replay the other night, the new track seems to be very interesting that resulted to several DNFs.

Next year, the Korean GP should be another one that we Filipinos would have a good chance of watching like the Malaysian and Singapore GPs.

MILESTONES: I would like to congratulate two cousins, who were successful in their bids to become barangay captains in Monday's elections - Carl Belarmino, who was reelected captain of Sambag 2, Cebu City, and Jeffrey Lebumfacil, who won in Tubod, Toledo City.

Congratulations also to some friends, who made it in the polls like The Freeman's Garry Lao (councilman of Tejero, Cebu City) and Roel Labrador (councilman of Cuanos, Minglanilla), Ryan Aznar (councilman of Sambag 2) and Franklyn Ong (councilman of Kasambagan, Cebu City).

Belated birthday greetings to those who turned a year older last Monday like my classmates Luisito 'Chito' Ramos and Mary Ann Galaura-Rafaeles. The same goes to Chari Benitez-Bieren, Ronald Tallo, Al Cuizon, Menchu Seno-Go, and Natasha Cang.
