CEBU, Philippines – CESAFI grandslam champion University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) Spiking Jaguars opened their quest for glory with back-to-back wins in the volleyball event of the University Games 2010 yesterday at Silliman University in Dumaguete City.
Aiming to improve its second place finish last year in this prestigious inter-collegiate sports conclave, USJ-R of legendary coach Grace Antigua overpowered two of the toughest squads in their bracket, Foundation University (FU) and Eulogio Amang Rodriguez Institute of Science and Technology (EARIST).
The twinkill wasn't served on a silver platter though at the Spiking Jaguars had to pass through a five-set thriller before fending off the equally-tough FU, 23-25, 22-25, 25-23, 25-19, 15-9.
Gaining momentum from that hard-earned victory, the Josenians went on to de-molish the EARIST in straight sets, 29-27, 25-22, 25-12.
Still, USJ-R faces an acit test as it takes on next Ateneo de Manila University.
In the women's bracket, Southwestern University (SWU) barged into the win col-umn with a 25-15, 25-16, 25-15 thrashing of St. Louis University of Baguio City, in the same way with the University of San Carlos (USC) Lady Warriors courtesy of a 25-21, 25-17, 25-16 whacking of Negros Oriental State University.
