Guinness Book of World Records: Biggest dance class makes it to book

CEBU, Philippines – Cebu City's largest dance class recorded in the history is one for the books - literally.

This as the Dancesport-Team Cebu City-led dance class of 7,770 participants at the Cebu City Sports Center in June 27 last year made it to the Guinness Book World Records 2011 edition.

Although DTCC has long been recognized to be a certified world record holder already for the largest dance class, it did not guarantee them a spot in the book.

The Guinness World Records did not even inform DTCC about this latest development and the long-time dancesport godfather of Cebu and now Cebu City Sports Commission chairman Edward Hayco only happened to learn about it when he was in Canada recently.

Out of curiosity, Hayco checked on the latest edition of the book that is not even out in most bookstores yet and to his surprise, saw DTCC's record under the topic popular culture-mass participation along with 29 others.

DTCC's achievement did not just land on page 100, but was considered as the highlight of the glossy page with a picture followed by the largest Thriller dance made in Mexico.

Aside from DTCC, one of the world's greatest boxers, Manny Pacquiao also made it into the 2011 edition for the most boxing world titles in different weight divisions.

Cebu City and Pacquaio's records somehow overshadowed the "bad record" made out of Philippines on the largest passport forgery, the country with most political armed groups, and the most dangerous country for the media.

The country in the past few years made several world records aside from DTCC's largest dance class, Cebu City also set the record for the most number of firework rockets launched in less than a minute, but this is not yet in the book.

According to the website of the Guinness World Records, each year there are approximately 65,000 inquiries from around the world from people who want to set or break records, but only 4,000 records can be published in the book. (FREEMAN)
