CEBU, Philippines - Defending women’s city cluster champion Talisay City is on course for another impressive title run as it wrapped up the Cluster 1 title undefeated in the 6th Governor Gwen Garcia Unity Volleyball (GUV) Cup last Sunday at the Diosdado Macapagal Sports Complex in Argao, Cebu.
Talisay of coach Joel Patigayon scored a six-game sweep in dominating fashion against Naga, 25-14, 25-13, San Fernando , 25-7, 25-7, Carcar, 25-2, 25-8, Sibonga, 25-10, 25-0, Argao, 25-7, 25-6 and Minglanilla, 25-12, 25-13.
Talisay’s reinforcements in RP beach volley team member Nerrissa “Nene” Bautista and Shayne Celis of the University of St. La Salle (USLS)- Bacolod were a vital factor in their one-sided victories. The towering imports got strong backing from Talisay standouts in team captain Mechell Matuguina, Jullett Mae Marikit, Florian Guttierrez, Marissa Lagancia and Ivy Abella.
“With our lineup, it was not that hard for us in beating our opponents. Now that we’re already assured of a quarterfinal slot, we will just do our best and strive hard to make it all the way to the finals and eventually defend out title,” said Matuguina.
Minglanilla joined Talisay into the next round with a 5-1 win-loss record.
This year’s GUV Cup is back into its original clustering since there will no longer be a city and a municipal cluster. (THE FREEMAN)
