GUV Cup volleyball opens today

- Marigold Lebumfacil -

CEBU, Philippines - The long wait is finally over as the much-awaited 6th Governor Gwen Garcia Unity Volleyball (GUV) Cup for men and women will kick off at 8 am today at the Mandaue City Sports and Cultural Complex.

Gov. Garcia, the woman behind the biggest and grandest volleyball event in the region, is overwhelmed by the participation of the different cities and municipalities in the province of Cebu.

Garcia looks foward to a higher level of competition considering that each team is allowed to hire at least two reinforcements.

Cebu Volleyball Association (CEVA) president Jun San Juan said this is a fresh start for each entry to do well and make the tournament more exciting.

The highlight in today's event is the search for supremacy in the battle of champions dubbed as “Who will reign supreme, the cities or the municipalities?”

This historic duel features the clash among last year's champions in the cities and municipalities in both men and women's division.

The women's bracket will feature Catmon against Talisay at 1 pm to be followed by the men's collision between Liloan and Mandaue.

Three Philippine Volleyball Federation (PVF) commissioners will be attending the grand opening salvo.

GUV Cup executive director Nona Catipay said this would already be the trend for GUV Cup in the next years, to feature the champions in the city and municipal clusters in the opener. (THE FREEMAN)
