CEBU, Philippines - Defending men’s champion University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) Spiking Jaguars notched their third straight victory at the expense of the University of the Visayas (UV) in the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation, Inc. (CESAFI) volleyball tournament yesterday at the Aznar Coliseum.
USJ-R of Cebu Sports Hall of Famer coach Grace Antigua had to pass through a nerve-wracking first set before thrashing the equally-tough UV Lancers, 30-28, 25-20, 25-21.
USJ-R’s triumph was spearheaded by team captain Leoniel Sanchez, CHED National Games MVP and Best Blocker, Jesriel Pino, Kevin Casia, James Lawas and neophyte setter Jayvelle Rojas.
In the other matches, the University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF) pummeled the University of San Carlos in straight sets, 25-16, 25-20, 25-19, while the University of Cebu (UC) survived a four-set showdown against Cebu Institute of Technology-University (CIT-U), 23-25, 25-22, 25-17, 25-20.
