Springdale teams score sweep in BTC caging
CEBU, Philippines - Separate teams of PAREF-Springdale School completed the elimination round of the 2nd BTC Cup over the weekend with a clean identical win-loss record of 10-0 in the 12-under and 10-under age categories.
The 12-under Springdale 1 first made mince meat out of Cebu Cherish School (CCS) 2 cutting the latter into pieces, 14-1, last Saturday at Banilad Town Centre (BTC).
The PAREF team also outsmarted the high-spirited San Isidro Parish School (SIPS) Baby Tamaraws, 10-8, then overpowered the Southwestern University (SWU) Baby Cobras, 9-4, last Sunday.
Joseph Jaime Sainz fired a total of 12 points in their final three assignments, and got equal production from the team’s low post man, Amiel Gerard Villegas.
Only Joshua Riner Ramas produced all the scores for SIPS of Talamban but the team nonetheless ended its quest seeded second to the team that gave its single loss with a 9-1 card.
At 10-under, Springdale 1 drowned Sacred Heart School (SHS) - Ateneo de Cebu Team 2, 6-1, on Saturday, then edged CCS, 4-2, by Sunday when it also took a game by default against Philippine Christian Gospel School (PCGS).
Enrique Giles Nathan Benedicto led the team, scoring 5 in defeating the Baby Magis Eagles and all his team’s scores against the Baby Red Fox.
Meanwhile, SHS-Ateneo 1 fought well in the final stretch to defend the 10-under Champions title the school clinched last year.
Justin Earl Dumol scored the winning basket as the Baby Magis Eagles won in overtime against Springdale 2, 5-4, last Saturday.
He and Enrique Navarro chipped in 2 goals each in crushing PCGS, 5-1, by Sunday and secure their spot as the second seed with a 7-3 win-loss record.
The top seeds in the 2nd BTC Cup will return on Saturday, Aug. 28, for the playoffs and All Star Games, enroute for the finals by Sunday.
Cherifer “Tangkad Sagad” growth vitamins, Robinson’s Supermarket and Nature Spring joined the usual ranks of Dimsum Break, Thirsty and Nike Athletic Club in making things happen for the 2010 edition of the BTC Cup. (FREEMAN)
