CEBU, Philippines – After five consecutive years of finishing as runner-up, the University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) belles finally dethroned perennial champion Pajo National High School in the 15th Milo Little Olympics Visayas Regional Finals at the Barrio Luz gym last Sunday.
Potot was even glad because despite his boys failing to make it this year in their category, he has the girls to represent for the national finals on October in Cagayan de Oro City.
Pajo made an impressive start after taking the first set, 25-22, courtesy of the powerful attacks of Marjorie Coloscos, Christy Sucalit, Gretchel Soltones, Ma. Charlita Auza and Lovely Marie Murillo.
However, USJ-R came raging in the second set with solid ground defense, 25-22, powered by Juldiza Mae Larada, Sheila Mae Bongo and Therese Mae Ramas.
Seemingly discouraged by the setback, PNHS was not able to recover as USJ-R dominated the last two sets, 25-18, 25-20.
"We will have a month-long training in preparation for the nationals. The girls just need a little adjustment in their floor defenses because offense-wise, they already have it," Potot added.
The younger sisters of the PNHS' players, Catmon Elementary School, bounced back as it claimed back-to-back titles by lording it over USJ-R in dominating fashion, 25-7, 25-10, in the elementary division.
Coach Vilma Veloso was glad that they were successful in getting the regional title again, which is another step towards their defense of the national crown.
We're happy because our victory is the fruit of our labor and hard work. The girls were really conditioned for this competition and they all aim to win. We need to double our efforts now in preparation for the nationals," said Veloso. (FREEMAN)
