10th CESAFI season on today

- Gabby G. Malagar -

CEBU, Philippines - The 10th season of the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation, Inc. (CESAFI) is being guaranteed as the most explosive that never happened in the past with a stadium-rocking and never-seen-before opening ceremonies to amaze the crowd as the member schools led by nine-time champion University of the Visayas (UV) Green Lancers will continue in their quest for Power and Dominance in consonance with this year’s theme as the games will start today at the Cebu Coliseum.

Formal hostilities will follow after the grand opening program which will be preceded by a holy mass to be officiated by Rev. Fr. Enrico Peter Silab, OAR with co-celebrants from other priests belonging from the member schools.

Joevin Eusebio, the marketing head of the CESAFI, said that with the help of the latest technology, this year’s opening is close to match the opening of the UAAP and the NCAA in Manila and it will not take a long time the CESAFI opening alone could give its own identity.

As expected, the opening program will showcase Cebu’s rich cultural tradition and those will be interpreted through different dance numbers billed as “Cebu the Festival Island.” Eight member schools will be performing and will flaunt their best talents.

Apart from dancing, the CESAFI will also choose the Miss CESAFI 2010 for the collegiate and high school divisions.

There’s a lot more to expect in the CESAFI 10th season under its president Engr. Rolando Villa representing the University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USP-F). The commissioner is Felix Tiukinhoy, Jr.

One thing that is remarkable is the augmentation of the Cebu Eastern College (CEC) Dragons and their lineup have been beefed up to avoid humiliation of being the most-taunted team in the league having been massacred in all those games last year.

The Dragons new coach Jerry Jaranilla assured that those routs last year will never happen this season and by just scoring one game they will make school history. The most prominent acquisition for the Dragons is Johnmar Lou Regidor, son of ex-pro and former USC Warrior Lou Regidor.

They are pitted against the Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu in the 4:30 pm opener. Last year proved to be a promising season for Sacred Heart where they went off to a hot start only to falter in their last three remaining games and bowed out of the tournament.

In the lone collegiate match, the USPF Panthers will take on the Cebu Institute of Technology (CIT) Wildcats.   – THE FREEMAN
