CEBU, Philippines - Four Cebuana athletes will form part of the Philippine team that will represent the country in its maiden venture in the Asian Rugby Football Union (ARFU) 7s Championships on August 25-27 in Shanghai, China.
They are Blessie de los Santos , Antonette Gambito, Aiumo Ono and Jennifer Pondoc, all members of the Cebu Pink Dragons Rugby Club.
Out of the 20 aspirants, they were chosen by the Philippine Rugby Football Union based on their exemplary performances both in practice and tournaments.
“It is with great pride and honor for me to be chosen to represent our country in this international tournament,” said Pondoc.
Gambito, on the other hand, said that she’s happy to don the RP colors but pressured at the same time.
“I am glad because I got this opportunity to play for our country and a little bit pressured because we will be clashing against the best teams in Asia ,” she said.
The Pinoy rugby buffs are expected to face tough opposition against powerhouse squads Malaysia, Kazahkstan and China .
“We’re very, very happy because we finally made it to the international scene after four years of hardwork,” said 24-year old delos Santos. – THE FREEMAN
