CEBU, Philippines - Patrick John Tierro showed why he is the country’s top tennis player as he easily crushed Cebu’s pride Bernardine “Niño” Siso in the 3rd Cebuana Lhuillier Men’s Open Tennis Championships at Baseline Sports and Recreation Center yesterday.
Tierro clobbered Siso at will, 6-2, 6-0 to proceed into the next round.
Another Cebuano Kennex Abadia, who was given a wild card entry, was not lucky himself as he was bundled out by the right-ranked Alexander Lazaro, 7-5,6-4.
Number three qualifier Israel Abarquez was the third Cebuano to bade goodbye in this PHILTA Group B event after bowing to Zamboanga’s Rocky Paglalunan, 6-3,6-3.
Davao’s Ralph Barte, on the other hand, grabbed a 6-1, 6-0 victory against Butuan’s Rhoel Capangpangan, while Surigao’s Gilbert Estrada survived a tough match against Davao’s Mark Anthony Alcoseba, 6-7(5), 7-6(2), 5-0.
Kim Ivor Saraza and Juvan Divinagracia also advanced into the next stage of the tournament. Manila’s Saraza defeated Davao’s Ruel Rubillar, 6-4, 6-4, while Divinagracia mauled Bacolod’s Antonio Sagansay, 6-2,6-1. – THE FREEMAN
