CEBU, Philippines - The Southwestern University Lady Cobras ended their maiden participation in the Shakey’s V-League Season 7 in style as they thrashed College of St. Benilde Lady Blazers in straight sets the other day at The Arena in San Juan City.
The Joerem Yu-mentored SWU made an impressive start through the leadership of its Thai import, Piyatida Lasungnern along with Erika Camille Verano, Raphril Aguilar, Danika Yolanda Gendrauli and Lorie May Layno, who powered the team to 25-19 in the first set.
In the second set, the Lady Blazers of coach Thelma Barina Rojas, came raging with powerful attacks from Giza Yumang, Ren Agero, guest player Rossan Fajardo and veteran Zharmaine Velez in the earlier moments of the game.
However, the reigning Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (CESAFI) champion bounced back with solid ground defense and witty tactics to snatch the driver’s wrest at 23-21.
But the Lady Blazers could only afford two more points as the Lady Cobras made it all the way to a 25-23 win to go up 2-0.
Seemingly discouraged by the two consecutive setbacks, the Lady Blazers were not able to recover, thus the Lady Cobras took the final set in dominating fashion 25-12.
“Finally, they were able to show their game in our last assignment. They played exemplary and they applied what they’ve learned in the previous matches that we had, especially on the adjustments needed,” said Yu.
“I could say that the girls are already competitive enough with their exposure and experience that they got from their participation in the Shakey’s V-League. This would be an added boost to the team’s future performances,” Yu added. – THE FREEMAN
