CV bets shine in dancesport
SAN JOSE, Tarlac, Philippines – Even if it’s only a demonstration sport, the Central Visayas Regional Athletic Association’s dancesport athletes served their purpose well by becoming the rest of the region’s motivating factor to go for gold in the 53rd Palarong Pambansa here at the newly-built Tarlac Reactional Park.
CVIRAA’s dancesporters dominated the elementary level and spiced up with a silver and a bronze in the secondary level, an event held as a pre-opening action in the Palaro.
Kathleen Joy Deluvio and John Paul Mocorro won the modern standard, while Christine and James Bryan Camacho topped the latin discipline.
In the secondary level, the tandem of Jasmine Iris Pogoy and Jamil Miñoza salvaged the silver while Jeric Canoy and Jen-Jeny Pogoy handed over bronze for a compete medal collection for CVIRAA.
Even if it is only a demonstration sport, the CVIRAA bets did their best to perform well and hopefully be a role model for the mostly Cebuano athletes-composed squad to perform their best in the week-long sports conclave.
DepEd-7 director Recaredo Borgonia wished that CVIRAA will be able to improve its fourth place finish in the overall standing last year, but plays safe by saying that if it can’t be done, they would just hope to play their best.
”We can never tell yet.We may have changed strategies, but everything remains to be seen.We will just have to play our best, and if our best is not enogh, at least we did our best,” Borgonia said.
Members of the Task Force CVIRAA who are overseeing the athletes training said that even with the limited time, players who have been picked to reinforce a winning team during the regional meet were able to train with the core team.
A total of six golds are at stake in athletics including secondary girls javelin throw, secondary boys long jump, triple jump and shot put.
Out of the 65 events under athletics, CVIRAA holds five records that remains unbroken including Melva Quirino in the secondary girls javelin of 39m in 1998, Irin Baluran in elementary girls triple jump (10.42m) in 2005, Jorge Pinanonang in the secondary boys 400m hurdles in 2006, Cliffford Bonjoc in secondary boys discus throw (41.62m) and Mary Jane Campus in the 3000m run with the time of 10:40.6 in 2002.
In the other medal-rich swimming event, CVIRAA also owns five of some of the most-long standing records. - THE FREEMAN
