Cebuano judoka Fernandez reaps more honors

CEBU, Philippines - After receiving a major award during last week’s 28th Sportswriters Association of Cebu-San Miguel Beer (SAC-SMB) All-Cebu Sports Awards, multi-titled Cebuano judoka Vicente “Nonoy” Fernandez III gained more accolades from the Universities Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) and his alma mater, the University of the Philippines-Diliman, the other night.

Fernandez was given a plaque of recognition by the UAAP for representing the country in an international competition in South Korea and Hong Kong.

Fernandez was also honored by UP with the Maroon jacket after emerging as the “Most Outstanding Athlete” for three years during the school’s annual Varsity Letter Award’s Day.

Fernandez, whose potential was discovered in the now defunct Batang Pinoy, was also feted with the Maroon P and Green P awards. Maroon and green represent their school’s color, while the letter P stands for both performance and Philippines.

The Maroon P award was bestowed upon Fernandez for being an outstanding athlete anew in men’s judo and the Green P commendation for being a national junior champion. – Caecent No-ot Magsumbol   (FREEMAN NEWS)
