ACT unveils American import
CEBU, Philippines - Inspite of its limited exposure in inter-school competitions here, the Asian College of Technology (ACT) still kept on building up its basketball team by recruiting American Clarence “The Black Superman” Jeffery to shore up its roster.
This as ACT president and CEO Bebot Abellanosa remains hopeful that the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation, Inc. (CESAFI) Board will accept them into its fold so Jeffery can showcase his hoop skills to the Cebuanos.
ACT has already applied to be a CESAFI member, but was denied due to the two-year moratorium that was implemented by the league in accepting new members in 2008. CESAFI commissioner Felix O. Tiukinhoy, Jr., however, stated that the moratorium has been once again extended, this time, for an indefinite period of time.
“We are a relatively young team and we are elated and happy to have Clarence here with us and hopefully, there will be a change of heart among the decision makers of the CESAFI. I hope that we will be able to join so that we can compete with the other schools,” said Abellanosa.
Jeffery is a 6-foot-2 wingman from Mississippi, United States. He has been in the country since 2008 while playing for the Sports Ambassadors, a traveling basketball squad that is trying to spread Christianity around the globe through the game of basketball. They played 34 games all over the country during that stint.
Apart from that, Jeffery has also played for the Mississippi Valley State Delta Devils, an NCAA Division III in the American Southwest Conference.
Jeffery’s latest visit though is expected to be a longer one as he will be part of the ACT Cyber Knights, arguably one of the best collegiate teams in the south that is not part of the Cebu Schools Athletic Schools Foundation Inc. (CESAFI).
“This is a milestone in my life. After my last visit here, I did not know if I was going to be able to come back. I had no idea where I will be playing but here I am, and I know that this is not an accident. I was so excited to be part of the Cyber Knights that when Coach Tata ( Merced ) told me that practice was at 6:30 am, I was already there at 5:30 am. But I did not come here to just play basketball, I came to meet my new family,” said Jeffery as he was introduced to the rest of the Cyber Knights. – Caecent No-ot Magsumbol (THE FREEMAN)
