CEBU, Philippines - Rhenzi Kyle Sevillano fought to a draw with Felix Shaun Balbona in the final round and that was all he needed to clinch the title in the Deep Blue “D” Woodpushers Chess Club Kiddies Chess Tournament last Sunday at SM City-Cebu.
Sevillano and Balbona were actually tied at the end of the 6-round Swiss system competition with 5.0 points each, but Sevillano bagged the top honors by the slimmest of margins when the tie-break system was applied. Sevillano got 22 points, ahead by just a matchstick over Balbona.
John Francis Balbona came in third, while Jeffu Dorog copped the fourth place honors.
Organized by Allen Borbon, the games were supervised by international arbiter Marvin Ruelan. —EBV (THE FREEMAN)
