Tiger's mulligan

FULL POINT - Nimrod NL Quiones -

After a very long silence, Tiger Woods is set to come out into the open and make an official statement. Maybe, by the time that you read this, he has already done so and our many questions and speculations have been answered.

While I believe that he ought to apologize not only to his wife and kids, but also to his millions of fans. Tiger’s infidelity makes him as human as all of us and except maybe for his superb golf skills, just like us he also errs from time to time.

More than the strain on his family relations and the millions of dollars he lost in income, Tiger must have learned a lot from his fall. This does not however mean that the fall means the end of his lucrative golf career, it can probably just be like one of those hazards in the golf course that you cannot get yourself out of.

Have you ever experienced losing several balls just so you could cross a ravine or a water hazard that only needs 130 yards to carry? Or how about a hazard or an area marked out of bounds that seems to be the favorite landing spot of your ball?

Tiger is in a much tougher situation. It can simply be said that he can drop another ball and take a mulligan. The fact that his wife, Elin, decided to stick it out, means there is hope.

Mulligans don’t come cheap as you have to pay a few hundred pesos for them in our local tournaments. In life, they cost a lot more, but then they give you a fresh chance to play again without penalty.

By the way, you don’t get too many mulligans, so make sure you play it well and right when you get one.

The team captains of the seniors’ team of Alta Vista Golf and Country Club, Boy Gonzalez, and Mactan Island Golf Club, Gen. Rodante Joya, have been very kind to provide me with the individual scores as I remain in Cebu while the action in the 63rd PAL Interclub has started in Negros Occidental.

The seniors’ event is for players aged 55 years old and above and also runs for four days in two courses – Negros Occidental Golf and Country Club and the Bacolod Golf Club. It uses the Molave Points System and will end on Sunday.

I am due in Bacolod on Monday for the men’s regular event and the team captains’ meeting, where Cebu is set to bid as host of the twin tournaments in 2011.

The Sacred Heart School-Jesuit (SHS-J) community will once again gather at the school campus in Canduman, Mandaue City tomorrow for the closing of the sportsfest and the family day celebration.

I received a text message yesterday from my good friend and football teammate, Patrio ‘Dondon’ Ramos, asking me to join the Dads team for an exhibition game against the high school team.

The game is set at 11:30 a.m. and I promised that I will be there as part of the audience but unfortunately not to play. I need to get a green light from my doctor and I don’t have it yet.

MILESTONES: I have many friends turning a year older this weekend.

Those who are celebrating today are Atty. Albert ‘Betoy’ Veloso, Marjorie Ann Aballe, Dr. Arleme Gutierrez-Macaibay, and Marcelyn Cabildo.

My good friend Chester C. Cokaliong is another birthday boy today as he celebrates his 49th. I’m looking forward to seeing him score his age in a basketball game one of these days.

Tomorrow’s greetings go to my buddy Michaelangelo Siapno, my fellow football dad Vicente Colonia, and my former students Jaja Oppus-Lanozo and Rochelle ‘Raki’ Vega-Siu.

More power to all of you!
