After experiencing an almost world class race in the Cebu City Marathon last January, runners will again be treated to another exciting running event. Yes folks, mark your calendars, the date is April 18 for the Great Lapu Lapu Run 2 that fires off at the Liberty Shrine. We were not supposed to divulge the details but a lot of runners are just itching for information. Well, the earlier we announce the race the better so runners could train. In some international races, organizers give you an entry form for the same race next year, the minute you entered the finish line. Waterfront Mactan GM Hembler Mendoza, now a full – pledged marathoner after finishing the 1 – 10 – 10 (CCM), is the spirit behind the race. Actually this is the second year of a not – so memorable race last year. Hembler who is also with the organizing committee, is making sure this year’s edition will be exciting. He has offered a trip to the moon to the country’s Filipino Ironman champion Noy Jopson and yours truly to direct the half – marathon that will also feature 10K, 5K and 3K categories.
Champions To Hong Kong
Besides the whopping P20,000 purse, the champions for both male and female, will receive an all – expense paid trip to the Standard Chartered Hong Kong Marathon next year, including accommodation. Do I hear Shangrila Hotel Hong Kong? Raffle prizes like an overnight stay at BBRC este … resort hotels and domestic travel tickets will be at stake. And just like the CCM, the GLLR will also have timing chips in the 21K and 10K categories. Runners will be given packed breakfast when they finished. “Oh anong say nyo?” Watch out for more updates.
More Sponsors For Rotary Run
Rudy Project and Arthro are the latest sponsors of the Cebu Rotary Run 2 that unfolds on February 21 at the SM City Parking Lot. Rudy Project Cebu distributor German sportsman Jens Funk is giving away two RP sunglasses as raffle prizes. Other sponsors of the race include Summit, 100 Plus, Jollibee, Alcordo Advertising, Hapee, Holiday Gym & Spa, ENT Products, ABS-CBN, Sunstar, The Freeman, Parklane International Hotel, SM City and Metrografix.
All Set For Quota 12k
Organizers of the Quota 12K Classic launched the race in a press con last Friday at Sunburst Mango. Heading the list are June Chionbian, president, Dr. Mitty Igaña vice president and project chair person, Helen Sanders, Nonie Espina, Melva Bacaltos, Luzil Herrera and Annie Kurumatani. Since Quota is a female organization, I wanted to wear a wig and disguise myself as Krista R but Mitty who has improved tremendously, finishing a 21K race in less than two years of running said I could come as Lisa Marie Presley. Seriously now, the champions in the 12K division pocket P6,000, the second placers P4,000 and the third placers P2,000. In the 6K category, the first placers will receive P3,000, the second placers P2,000 and third placers P1,000.
Serial Runner
I was amused by the moniker, RVP ( Running Virus Positive) Max Limpag called Joel Garganera. Max said Joel is a serial marathoner. I didn’t know there’s such a thing, what I know of is a serial killer like Jack the Ripper. Well, maybe Joel got the title after completing six marathons in 12 months. After finishing his first in the 2009 Standard Chartered Hong Kong Marathon, he ran in the Milo Marathon(July), Quezon City International Marathon(October), Standard Chartered Singapore Marathon, (December), Cebu City Marathon( January ) and just three weeks ago the Condura Marathon. This May Joel is running again but wait a minute, “Asa ba ang marathon this May?” Your guess is as good as mine. Hala Bira!
