CEBU, Philippines - Three bets from Mandaue City have made it to the penultimate round of the 2010 National Youth Amateur Boxing Championships in Puerto Princesa, Palawan.
This means that they are assured of winning at least a bronze medal.
Those who advanced to the semifinals are Rheson Tarona, Richard Rama, and Rommel Tuñacao.
Tarona was first to make it to the medal round while Rama earned his slot in the 26 kgs. class via a close 15-12 victory over host Puerto Princesa-A’s Radili Abas.
Rama had to go through the proverbial eye of the needle in the bout as he and his foe were still tied going into the third and final round.
It was 3-all after the first round then 8-all after the second setting up a thrilling closing final canto.
Rama went for the body of Abas in the closing round earning the nod of the judges.
The same was not however the case for Tuñacao in the 28 kgs. category as he scored an easy win over Bacolod’s Ben Ortata.
“Ang kang Rama grabe gyud ka dikit ang laban. Kang Tuñacao nuon, klaro kaayo nga siya’y daug.Layo ang biya sa points sa kontra,” said coach Peter Cuizon to The Freeman.
Rama faces another Puerto Princesa boxer, but under its team B, Ian Fabial next.
Tuñacao faces Valencia’s Ben Vanguardia and goes up against Tarona against Tagbilaran’s Victor Cornel. – Caecent No-ot Magsumbol (FREEMAN NEWS)
