CEBU, Philippines - A junior golf champion and the father of a jungolf standout ruled the 11th President’s Cup Tournament of the Cebu Country Club, which was played Friday and Saturday.

Gio Gandionco, a champion junior golfer, and his partner Noel Ybañez, father of jungolfer Jan-jan, combined for a two-day aggregate of net 188 strokes to bag the overall title.

The pair had a gross 64 and a net 53 on the first round, which used the scramble format, then shot a gross 76 for a net 65 on the alternate stroke play during the second day.

The title for Division 1 went to Charlie Go and Lloyd Jefferson Go with a net score of 121 strokes on rounds of 58 and 63.

Runnerup honors for the premiere handicap category went to the tandem of Ricky Brown and Tony Jackson with 123 strokes on rounds of 59 and 64. Second runnerup was the duo of Bayani Garcia and Lucio Tapnio with 125 (58-67).

The first day format had both players teeing off and then they would decide which ball is in a better position and they play from there. They then hit their shots and again pick the better of two ball positions repeating the process until their hole out.

On the second day, players alternated in hitting the ball until it is holed out. Handicaps were determined by halving the sum of the handicaps of the team members.

In Division 2, Alex Garcia and Ben Li won the title with an aggregate of 124 strokes off rounds of 60 and 64.

First runnerup was the father and son team of Nestor and Marvin Mendoza with 128 (60-68) followed by the tandem of Jack Limyutian and Kim Kwang Seok, who had the same total, but lost in the countback.

Joy Anthony Ong and Ernesto Siguan topped Division 3 with a total score of 127 strokes on rounds of 64 and 63 and edging Mario King and Peter Mancao in the countback.

King and Mancao settled for the first runner-up honors while second runnerup was the tandem of Edwardson Chiu and Mike Noel with 131 (64-67).

The title for the guest division went to Andrew Cañete with 145 strokes on rounds of 71 and 74 and beating runnerup Choy Ramos in the countback.

A special award was given to the team of Gabriel Yap, Jr. and Albuen Bejar for the best score in the scramble format with a net 55.

The special award for the best score in the alternate stroke went to the pair of Peter Po, Jr. and Jerry Ong Uy with 67. – THE FREEMAN
