Last minute failure

-

CEBU, Philippines - In sports, those who deliver in the waning moments of the game to pull a victory for their team, become heroes.

Those buzzer-beaters, even if they do not necessarily win the ballgame for the team, are exciting to see.

Like any sports fan, I also enjoy watching people perform during clutch time, which often changes the results of the game.

This is the reason why several professional athletes are among the best in their sport like Tiger Woods for golf, Michael Jordan for basketball, and Derek Jeter for baseball to name a few of the top clutch players.

But the habit of postponing things until the last minute or maybe second doesn’t always work.

Take the case of Jenson Button of Brawn, who won the world championship for Formula-1 racing this year. Button did not wait for the last few races to pile up the points, he started very strong in the season and somewhat used the savings he made in the first few races to take him through the wild and wooly closing of this season’s F-1 circuit.

I also remember the story of the ant and the grasshopper. The ant made sure he’d stock up for the rainy season while the grasshopper just enjoyed the sunlight. When the rains came, the grasshopper went hungry while the ant had food stored to last him for many days.

Do you also remember those exams where you crammed and ended with a big fat Zero? Or how about burning the midnight candle for a school project that you could not pass the next day as you cannot finish it?

Life might be more interesting when you live on the edge, well that is if you a a movie character like James Bond, but I’m sure it’s more fun to watch him in the movies than be in his shoes. Well, maybe when he’s around all those gorgeous women, but not when his life is on the edge.

Oh well, the introduction seems to have dragged too long when my point is just to tell those who are complaining that they failed to register before the October 31st deadline were deprived of their right.

Yeah right!

You had ten months to register, but you waited for the last minute, now you are complaining.

While many seem to have come up with reasons like they were too busy with work or school, there seems no valid reason really as the ten-month period seems long enough for everyone to go to the Comelec office.

One phrase in golf that reminds me of this situation is, “he ran out of holes.” Yes folks, some players seem to suddenly play very well, but then there are only a specific number of holes to play and once they’re gone you can’t ask for more.
