CEBU, Philippines - The University of the Visayas (UV) netters reigned prominently in the 2009 Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation, Inc. (CESAFI) tennis tournament after taking two of the four titles available at the Alta Vista Golf and Country Club tennis courts the other day.
UV topped the men’s singles and women’s doubles plus a runner-up finish in the men’s doubles.
Francis Largo bagged the gold in men's singles after registering a 10-5 victory against Jayvee Canoy of the University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R).
In the distaff side, Sallydine Siso of the University of San Carlos (USC) made her debut in the tertiary level a memorable one.
The eldest of the well-known Siso siblings scored a stunning 10-7 upset of defending champion Lovelie Soquiño of the University of Cebu (UC) to claim the women's tiara.
USC also took home two bronzes in the boys singles competition through Christian John Cabahug and Lowell Lloyd Cañete. Velez College ’s Hermosilla and Kristel Mae Buenacosa grabbed a bronze each in the girls bracket.
In the women's doubles event, Julian Jopia and Genevive Petecio of UV proved too much for USJ-R’s Stacy Barquin and Glena Lambayan, 10-2, while in the men's class, Kennex Abadia and Israel Abarquez of USJ-R came up with a 10-4 drubbing of UV’s Ian Yabe and Justin Espinosa.
The Visayanians' success in CESAFI tennis gave them more reasons to celebrate after one of their top stars Hannah Espinosa won in the Milo National Finals in Manila over the weekend.
Espinosa’s victory earned her a ticket to Malaysia for a four-leg tennis circuit next month along with another decorated Cebuano racquet-wielder Jacob Lagman. —Caecent No-ot Magsumbol (FREEMAN NEWS)
