CEBU, Philippines - The Super Idols of playing coach Bong Pepito and the Pañeros got past separate foes to share the temporary lead with clean 3-0 slates in the 3rd Integrated Bar of the Philippines (IBP) basketball tournament at the Capitol Parish gym along Escario street, this city.
The Super Idols subdued the Pecandela Law Firm led by rebounding monster Mark Gamallo, 63-58, while the Pañeros tripped the winless Pistons bannered by the Rama brothers Enric and Nolly, 65-60.
The Pecandela squad actually dominated the first three quarters of the match, with Gamallo and Wilson Tagsip spearheading the offensive charge. However, they wilted under the porous defensive stance of Ramsely Quijano and Cris Abayon of the Super Idols in the windup.
Fermin Pepito scored a crucial layup in the final 48 seconds of the contest to give the Super Idols their first taste of lead. A short jumper by Santiago formally wrapped up Super Idols’ victory in come-from-behind fashion.
Pepito and Santiago had 19 and 18 points, respectively, for the Super Idols, while Tagsip led Pecandela with 15 points.
Barry Busi, on the other hand, powered the Pañeros with 19 points followed by Balorio with 10.
Nilo Ortiz paced the Pistons with 14 markers.
In the other game, Mt.Zion zapped YLAC, 80-70, while the Casino Rubbing Alcohol trounced the Opascor Eagles,77-69. Both Mt. Zion and Casino hold 2-1 win-loss cards.
Benjo Macion scored a game-high 26 points for Mt. Zion, while Van Ligutan topscored for YLAC with 17 points. – GGM (THE FREEMAN)
