The Politics of dancing

FULL POINT - Nimrod NL Quiñones -

I’m still ecstatic days after witnessing the attempt at the world record for the biggest dance class last Saturday afternoon at the Cebu City Sports Center.

A total of 7,770 individuals took part in the event organized by Team Cebu City DanceSport headed by Edward Hayco with Crisaldo ‘Loloi’ Rendon as the head instructor.

I was at the CCSC earlier than I had expected. It must have been excitement and well a bit of commonsense also since it would be impossible to find parking if I took longer.

I hope that the documentation that was submitted and the tons of photos and videos taken would help convince the people at Guinness that last Saturday’s activity was indeed one for the world record book.

While I have been very happy with the event last Saturday, I felt very disappointed at some people who put a political twist into the story.

The world record attempt was in no way meant to be pitted against the tribute to Michael Jackson made by the inmates of the Cebu Provincial Detention and Rehabilitation Center.

Those, who think it was, are probably just too lazy to read the newspapers a few weeks ago when the word about the world record attempt was first announced.

Also, while the inmates have given Cebu pride due to their popularity on YouTube, the world record attempt was not meant to be simply for uploading, but for the Guinness Book to break the mark set by Budapest, Hungary late May this year.

I am writing this because I feel that the organizers of the world record attempt worked long and hard along with the thousands who showed up for the event.

The participating instructors are among the dedicated men, women, boys and girls, who have volunteered to help teach those who want to learn dancesport in the various places around Cebu City including the remotest of the mountain barangays.

The attempt was made in order to put Cebu in the world map as the dance capital of the world in preparation for a big dancesport event later this year that shall bring together the world’s best dancers to our shores.

I am not part of the organizing committee and in fact I was at the event as one of the citizens of Cebu wanting to see history happen.

I hope this helps clarify matters, but then there will always be those who have minds that think so maliciously.

Both events last Saturday actually complement each other in our effort to be the world’s dance capital and we should continue to promote our dancing inmates and dancesport to draw more interest to Cebu.

Cebu is dancing its way to the world record books and in the worldwide web so forget the politics of dancing.

Milestones: Belated birthday greetings to Continental Air’s Christine Abalo, who is a long-time friend of mine. She turned a year older yesterday along with Guy Gabison an even older friend from back our elementary days.

Happy birthday greetings go to Stephen Villamor, who turns a year older today.

More power to all of you!
