Fernandez siblings shine in Manila judo tilt

- Caecent No-ot Magsumbol -

CEBU, Philippines - The Fernandez brothers gave Cebu another honor after winning a gold and bronze in the 2009 National Boys and Girls Judo Championships in SM Marina yesterday.

Vicente “Nonoy” Fernandez III is back in full form after suffering a major injury six months ago as he bagged the gold in the -66 kgs.class.

Nonoy Fernandez went too much for University of Sto.Tomas’ Jon Rodriguez in the final battle.

Nonoy’s younger brother, Joaquin, for his part, came up with a bronze in the -55 kgs.class.

Joaquin made sure he won’t go home empty-handed to the delight of his coach Tracy Badonio, who was happy enough that his two wards in the national event ended with a medal each.

Prior to this action, Nonoy Fernandez was named by the University of the Philippines-Diliman as one of its Most Outstanding Athletes for all his achievements in judo in the last school-year.

Aside from that, Fernandez, one of RP’s best junior judokas, also received a plaque of recognition from the Universities Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) for his remarkable performance as well as for his inclusion into the RP squad during an international action in Japan.  - THE FREEMAN
