Freeman Cebu Sports

A different golf event

FULL POINT - Nimrod NL Quiones -

I would say that my 13 years of being part of golf tournament committees have taught me a lot of lessons mostly on making sure that every detail is taken care of so that there won’t be problems on tournament day.

I have also learned that meetings help get people moving. Last Tuesday, during the meeting of the committee for The View Invitational, the members were busy making phone calls to confirm sponsorships. It would not have been that easy to move when you are not with the group.

I have also learned that golfers are a hard group to please, but in the end you learn that getting a chance to play, being with friends, getting great giveaways and most specially winning in the raffles are what spell success for tournaments.

I’ve also learned that most players would wait for the last minute and start asking organizers to accommodate them because they haven’t registered early enough to get the tee time they desire or worse a tournament slot.

While many of these things are regular stuff that you have in tournaments, the 3rd Corporate Cup of Y101 set this June 5 at the Cebu Country Club is your usual tournament, but at the same time not your usual event, which made it a hit in the first two editions.

With the third edition of the event just around, the corner, I am again amazed at the excitement of the players wanting to be part of it.

One thing that players look forward to in the Y101 Corporate Cup are the guns from Armscor that are being raffled off during the awards night.

Armscor, which is owned by Martha’s family, is the biggest backer of the tournament.

Joseph Stevens, Martha’s better half, said that there would be more surprises in store for the participants. Although he won’t divulge it during the press conference, I got an idea what they are thanks to Facebook hehehe…

I was actually in for a big surprise also during the presscon when they told me I was the tournament director. How could I say no to the CEO of my favorite station?

See you this Friday at Cebu Country Club. Fore!

I got word yesterday that the May Monthly Medal of Alta Vista Golf and Country Club has been reset to Sunday.

The tournament was originally set today.

That means I’ll have to miss it again as I work on Sundays.

The school break seems to have gone so fast with classes starting this Monday in many schools.

I hope that the interest in sports that your kids picked up would be sustained during the school year.

One positive thing that I have noticed is that many schools are now keen on developing the athletic potentials of their students.

We parents also need to shape up as we brace for the heavy traffic early mornings while taking our kids to school.

MILESTONES: I’d like to wish Martha Gabriele Miñoza a happy birthday as she turned a year older yesterday. Martha is the niece of my children as she’s the daughter of their first-cousin Teeny.

Happy birthday greetings go to Mae Ann ‘Sitam’ Manubag and to Danna Liza Toledo, who are celebrating today.

Advanced greetings go to my classmate Elizabeth de Dios-Bondoc and to my fellow columnist in the business section of The Freeman Chris Malazarte, who are turning a year older tomorrow.

More power to all of you!
