CEBU, Philippines – The quarterfinal round of the Cebu Eastern College Alumni Basketball Association’s 11th Dr. Chen Lieh Fu Memorial Cup will take off today at the City Sports Club-Cebu gym with MFL Mini-Mart ’98-A and First Family Appliance ’87/94 enjoying twice-to-beat incentives over separate foes.

The Class ’98-A will go up against GCM Merchandise ’98-B in the first game at 7:30 pm, while Class 87/94 will tackle Gregoria’s Curtains and Trim Haus ’89/93 in the main tussle at 9 pm.
At the end of the classification round, six-time champion Roadstar/Castrol ’96 had to went through some rough moments before navigating through a 71-68 victory over the gritty Shell ’78-85.
Arniel Frank Pelaez had 16 points, six rebounds and two assists, while Shaun Christopher Wang banged in 14 markers, four rebounds and two steals for Class ’96, which earned automatic semifinal berth.
Class ’96 actually figured in a three-way tie with RJX Transsport Solutions ’99 and Centennial Hardware ’95 with identical 13-2 win-loss records, but Class ’96 and ’99 clinched the top two spots in Division II by virtue of a higher quotient.
Despite the setback, Class ’78/85 also advanced into the semifinal phase outright for topping Division I with a 12-3 slate.
Chester Cokaliong was again on fire, bombarding eight triples of 26 points for Class ’78/85. The Shell-backed squad threatened for the last time at 68-69, as Wang calmy hit a pair of free throws to settle the final outcome.
Edvin Kaw handed 16 points, 14 rebounds and three assists for Class ’78/85 followed by Wilson Yu with 14 points and 12 rebounds.In the other game, Edison Ong unloaded season-highs 23 points and 19 rebounds as Class ’89/93 escaped with a 65-62 victory over First ACY Shipping, 65-62, to book the last quarterfinal ticket in Division I.
