Dancesport and UP golfest

While we are so engrossed with the Pacman fever in Cebu and other parts of the country, there is a team from Cebu City that is also scoring big in the United States – Team Cebu City DanceSport.

On the May 10 text message that team director Edward Hayco sent me, he told me about how the team bagged a total of 50 gold medals in the Atlanta leg of the US DanceSport Open Circuit. 

The gold haul is double the 25 that the team won in Los Angeles.

What makes this triumph very big is that the competition has drawn not less than 4,000 dancesport athletes.

Surely, this feat makes us very proud to be Cebuanos.

Organizers of the 1st UP Batch ’84 Inc. Fun Golf Tournament were probably overwhelmed by the response to their call for entries as their estimate of only about 50 participants was almost doubled.

Arriving at the Mactan Island Golf Club very early yesterday, I saw many familiar faces at the registration counter.

What was surprising was seeing many unfamiliar faces among the participants as many people just walked in and signed up.

I’m not from the organizing class, but since we come from a rather small school, I know almost all of them despite the changes that took place the past 25 years since they finished high school a year ahead of my class.

Maybe many of the participants of the event never knew that despite the severe lack of facilities of our alma mater, it was the only school to have a golf course inside the campus.

Well, not exactly a real golf course, but I do remember many people living outside the campus, who used our field to practice their golf game putting holes in strategic areas around the football field.

Playing football at UP Cebu used to include dodging golf balls as part of the warm-up exercises.

Those who would like to witness top-notch football action can still do so today and tomorrow as the 9th National Inter-club Tournament is winding down.

The teams feature some of the country’s top players making the tournament a must-watch for the football fans.

Games are played at the University of San Carlos Talamban Campus and at San Roque Parish Field.

MILESTONES: I’d like to wish my niece and our sportswriter Marigold Lebumfacil a very happy birthday as she turns a year older today. Making the celebration sweeter is the fact that she also passed the recent Licensure Examination for Teachers.
