CEBU, Philippines – The 14th edition of the Gullas Cup, the biggest age-group tennis competition in Southern Philippines, will blast off today in two separate venues.
The girls division will be played at the Baseline Tennis Center, while the boys and the unixex-10 under will be at the Cebu Country Club.
Over 200 entries from host Cebu, Leyte, Misamis Oriental and Negros will vie for top honors in different categories.
The organizers are expecting a huge turnout of entries because of the two other tournaments being held prior to the Gullas Cup.
The sponsorship of Babolat, a brand of racquet that is being used by the world’s top pro players such as Rafael Nadal, Andy Roddick, and Carlos Moya, is an added attraction to the event.
The Most Outstanding Player of the five-day tilt spearheaded by the Gullas family will receive P10,000 worth of Babolat racquet.
The top performers in each class, on the other hand, will get trophies and gift certificates from Babolat and other sponsors.
Aside from that, the winners will also earn points for their individual rankings as the Gullas Cup is a Philippine Lawn Tennis Association (PHILTA) Group 2-sanctioned event.
The Gullases led by Cebu First District Rep. Eduardo R. Gullas and his brother Jose R. Gullas put up the event as part of their dedicated effort to further hone up the skills of aspiring netters not only in Cebu but in other parts of the Vis-Min region. – THE FREEMAN
