CEBU, Philippines – Team Cebu City grabbed another gold in the 2009 Milo-National Open Track and Field Championships through the efforts of Ernesto Ybañez yesterday at the Don Narciso Ramos Sports and Civic Center in Lingayen, Pangasinan.
Ybañez duplicated the golden feat of his female counterpart Irin Baluran by topping the boys long jump. The freshman BS Criminology student of the University of Cebu leaped to a distance of 6.91 meters.
Two other TCC bets bagged one bronze each through Dharl Pitogo in the 110m hurdles and Carl Jeanette Malazarte in the 3,000m steeplechase event under the juniors division.
On the other hand, Cebu ’s former road running king Mendel Lopez got off to a good start by clinching a bronze in the 5K run seniors category.
Lopez, who is now connected with the Philippine Navy, finished behind Eduardo Buenavista and Julius Sermona, both from the Philippine Air Force (PAF).
Despite placing just third, Lopez is happy enough with his performance as it gained him entry into the national training pool. — Caecent No-ot Magsumbol (THE FREEMAN)
