Floyd Mayweather, Sr. advised his ward Ricky Hatton to retire from boxing after absorbing a devastating second round knockout from the hands of Manny Pacquiao last Sunday in Las Vegas.
That would be the last advice Floyd Sr. may have offered his ward. He will get the axe shortly as trainer of Ricky Hatton. We have seen the last of Floyd Sr. in Hatton’s corner.
Mayweather looked as stunned as his ward after the knockout. If there was another guy who had the daylight knocked out of him, that would be Floyd Sr. He guaranteed a Hatton victory because of his size and power. He was so confident of victory he called Pacquiao as an amateur.
After the fight, his ward looked every inch an amateur. And as I said in my column a few days before the fight Hatton will likely walk into a punch, which he did. If there were anyone who felt the impact of that left hook from Pacquiao, it would be Floyd Sr.; the punch went smack into his chin.
Mayweather, being himself, put the blame on Ricky. He said, “Ricky lost because he didn’t do what I told him. He didn’t keep his hands up. I also told him not to fight so aggressively from the start. I can’t fight for him. He should retire.”
Even Freddie Roach agreed with his rival. “Ricky should call it a day. He is well off, he has his family and he doesn’t need to go through anything like this again. Very few fighters are ever the same after taking a knockout this bad. This was devastating,” explained Roach.
If I were Hatton, I won’t retire. I’ll challenge Pacquiao for a rematch. If I were Hatton, I’ll make Pacquiao an offer he couldn’t refuse – a winner-take-all match – anywhere in the world as long as there’s a table, two chairs and lots and lots of ice cold beer.
This time, I’ll bet on Hatton. The Englishman is a known drinker – Bacchus resurrected. After stopping Paulie Malignaggi last year, Hatton reportedly splurge on pints of beer!
If there’s a match that Hatton will win against Pacman, that would be in beer drinking!
Manny is a drinker as well, but he would be no match for Hatton.
For sure, Manny spent a lot of nights drinking, but Hatton is a different animal. He drinks beer for water. He’s not called Ricky “Fatton” Hatton for nothing.
To forget his KO loss to Floyd Jr, Hatton had a four-day drinking spree. He reportedly downed 57 pints or almost 38 liters! That’s more than the volume of the gas tank of our Toyota Liteace!
This time, Pacman will hit the deck first; I guarantee that!

Businesses often lose their customers because of lousy service. Once a customer is not satisfied with service, not only will he keep his money and bring it to another store or establishment, he will tell his friends. These friends will tell their friends and the cycle goes on.
It is imperative then that businesses learn how to keep their customers for a lifetime by giving them excellent service. Leaders Link along L. Jayme Street in Mandaue City will conduct a two-day seminar/workshop on customer service on May 14-15. Interested parties may want to call Donna at (032) 422-5552 or (032) 4228505.
