TACLOBAN CITY, Philippines – The Central Visayas Regional Athletic Association (CVIRAA) squad became unpredictable even as the 2009 Palarong Pambansa is now on its final day of competition today at the Leyte Sports Development Center here.
CVIRAA yesterday got two more golds spiced up with four silvers and six bronzes from different sporting events spread in different venues here.
Swimmer Loren Dale Echavez saved CVIRAA from a gold medal shutout at the pool by topping 800m freestyle competition with a time of 10 minutes and 44 seconds.
Echavez’s day, however, was tainted by disqualification in the 100m butterfly final.
The 100m butterfly gold was eventually won by Region IV-A’s Delia Angela Cordero.
Aside from the gold, Cordero shattered one of the oldest existing record in Palaro incidentally owned by Cebuana Lynette Ang.
Ang’s 1:07.25 mark was erased by Cordero’s 1:06 clocking.
On the other hand, two other CVIRAA swimmers contributed a silver each through James Oscar Gravador in the 100m butterfly and Ana Daniela Paraiso in the 400m freestyle both in the elementary level.
The other gold medal of CVIRAA came from taekwondo jin Keith Brian Fernandez in the elementary divisions 152-160cm class.
Another jin, Charisse Labiste won silver under the category 3.
In gymnastics, Ricarjay Gabatbat came up with a silver in the individual all-around in the men’s artistic gymnastics as Tracy Badonio wound up with a silver in the hoop and a bronze in the rope paraphernalia in the rhythmic sportive gymnastics (RSG).
CVIRAA also got a team bronze from the elementary MAG while Mary Carmeli Garovillo debuted in the secondary level with a bronze from the rope competition.
Finally, CVIRAA got medals in arnis after several days of waiting with flyweight Daryll Camargo and pinweight Jenny dela Pena settling got a bronze each in the full contact event.
Tennis players bannred by Siso sisters Sallymae and Sallydine and Jayvee Canoy and Amiel Aya-ay assured CVIRAA of at least two silver medals.
CVIRAA so far has 3-4-8 gold,silver,bronze medals in the secondary level and 3-4-2 gilts in the elementary division. – THE FREEMAN
