Mondares-LJ Go tandem wins 9th Island Tee title
CEBU, Philippines – The tandem of Fernando Mondares and 13-year-old LJ Go bagged the top honors in the Kadaugan sa Mactan 9th Island Tee that ended with a blessing of rain showers last Sunday at the Mactan Island Golf Club.
Mondares fired nines of 36 and 39 on his first round for a total of 3-over-par 75 strokes while Go shot 35 and 39 for two-over-par 74. In the second round, Mondares made one-over-par 73 strokes on nines of 36 and 37 and Go made the same.
The duo scored a total of 295 strokes in the member-guest event that allowed players to play two rounds within the four-day period.
The class A title went to the duo of Andrew Cañete and Cris Saguran of Victorias with rounds of 76 and 73 points for a total of 149.
First runner-up for the premiere handicap class went to the team of Capt. Isabelo Gador and Nestor Cabrera with rounds of 74 and 73 for a total of 147. Second runner-up was the team of Bart Vergara and Hiroyuki Hasegawa with 146 on rounds of 71 and 75.
The Modified Stableford Scoring System was used for the event.
Jude Jadraque and Marcelino Yu combined for 164 points in two days scoring rounds of 83 and 81 to claim the class B diadem.
First runner-up for class B was the team of Sgt. Romano Castillon and Danny Orbe with 160 shooting rounds of 82 and 78. Second runner-up was the team of Maj. Elvis Jequinto and Ed Eroy with 151 on rounds of 70 and 81 points.
Maj. Gen. Nathaniel Legaspi, chairman of the MIGC board, said that the tournament was the club’s contribution to Lapu-Lapu City’s sports tourism campaign.
The tournament was help in close coordination with the Lapu-Lapu City government, which celebrated the Kadaugan sa Mactan or the victory of the forces of Rajah Lapu-Lapu over the Spanish invaders.
The class C plum went to the duo of Raul Polancos and Arnel Matalang with a total score of 156 on rounds of 76 and 80.
First runner-up for class C was the team of Atty. Ted Villarmia and Dominic Espinoza with rounds of 78 and 72 for a total of 150 points. Boy Tolentino and Melvin Alvarez were second runner-up with their total score of 149 (69-80).
The class D title went to the team of Lt. Ranje Lao and Joel Bersales with a total of 163 points on rounds of 75 and 88.
Maj. Alfredo Senosa and Gen. Ding Lelis finished as first runner-up with a total of 155 on rounds of 83 and 72 while second runner-up was the duo of Col. Antonio Gardiola, Jr. and Col. Elmer Soria with 151 on rounds of 68 and 83.
The seniors’ division title went to Jun Alcantara and Tony Corpuz with 153 points on rounds of 87 and 66.
First runner-up for the seniors’ category was the team of Felix Villanueva and Bobby Barria with 150 (73-77) while Boy Alegre and former Comelec Chairman Ben Abalos finished as second runner-up with 149 (71-78).
The tournament was participated in by about 400 players said Retired Gen. Rodante Joya, the club’s general manager. He said that the showers late Sunday halted play for a while, but action immediately resumed when the skies cleared. – THE FREEMAN
