Talisaynons victorious in regatta boat race

CEBU, Philippines - The CAMP-sponsored hometown bets Marlon Abines and Charlie Abapo ruled the 2009 Talisay Baruto Regatta Festival in Talisay City the other day.

Abines and Abapo of Talisay prevented two fishermen from Cordova from spoiling their day and the rest of the Talisaynons who came to watch the traditional sailboat competition, which is one of the sidelights of the reenactment of the Talisay landing.

Abines and Abapo bested close to 20 other competitors in the six nautical miles race. They got P30,000 for their feat.

The tandem of Francisco Gamboa and Delfin Pacaldo of Cordova settled for second place, while the Square and Compass Mason-backed Virgilio Jumao-as and Gilberto Obrero landed third. Gamboa and Pacaldo pocketed P15,000, while Jumao-as and Obrero received P10,000.

The Sumalinog brothers Lyndon and Ricardo missed the top three spots of the event supported by Cebu City First District Rep. Eduardo “Ediegul” R. Gullas,Vice Governor Greg Sanchez and Mayor Soc Fernandez but got a big around of applause plus an award for having the most colorful “baruto”.

There were more fishermen who wanted to join the race but failed to pass the standard set by the event organizers led by sportsman David Odilao Jr. – Caecent No-ot Magsumbol (THE FREEMAN)
