GCM Merchandise, MFL Mini Mart score in CECABA

CEBU, Philippines - GCM Merchandise ’98-B and MFL Mini Mart ’98-A overcame separate foes in the Cebu Eastern College Alumni Basketball Association’s 11th Dr. Chen Lieh Fu Memorial Cup last Saturday at the CEC gym. Class ’98-B rolled past Cebu Diamond Auto Parts 2000, 48-45, while Class ’98-A finally barged into the win column with a 73-69 disposition of Schick Razor ’84/92.

Leovigildo Yu had 22 points and five rebounds, while Robinson Yap banged in 13 points and eight rebounds for Class ’98-B, which trailed by four points after the first period, 10-14.

But Class ’98-B fought back with aplomb in the middle quarters to grab the lead for good, 33-31, heading into the final 10-minute mark of the contest.

Class ’98-B improved its win-loss record to 4-1, while handing Class 2000 its third setback in five starts. Lorenz Azarraga was the lone double-digit scorer for Class 2000 with 10 points on top of five rebounds.

Earlier, four players submitted twin figures as Class ’98-A snapped out of its four-game losing skid. Erick Andrew So scattered a season-best 21 points, nine rebounds and two assists, while Rex Millan chipped in 18 markers, seven and three blocks.

Santos banged in 14 points and 10 rebounds, while Paul Timothy So netted 13 points, eight rebounds, seven assists and a record seven steals for Class ’98-A, which dictated the pace of the match since taking off to a hot 20-13 start.

Ryan Ordes pumped in 22 points, nine rebounds and three assists, Richard Lanutan added 176 points and three assists, while star center Sammy Sia fired 15 points and four rebounds, but their efforts went to waste as Class ’84/92 suffered its fourth defeat with only win to show.
