Tormis is first Cebuana to represent RP in ASEAN table tennis tourney

-

MANILA, Philippines - University of Cebu’s Elona Dane Tormis gets ready for the toughest challenge in her career, thus far, as she represents the country in the 2009 ASEAN Juniors Table Tennis Championships this July in Singapore.

Tormis earned a slot to Singapore after being named into the national pool following an impressive performance in last year’s national open in Manila.

The youthful Tormis is the first Cebuana to have played in the ASEAN Juniors and the seventh over among the Cebuanos.

Incidentally, all the Cebuanos who saw action in this international event are under the wings of coach Jessica Jawad-Honoridez.

The first two wards of Honoridez who played in the ASEAN tilt were the Motel siblings - Emmanuel and Michael then followed by likes of Jay Impuesto, Jonathan Jacalan Benedict Gantuangko and Dannel Jay Tormis, the younger brother of Elona Dane.

Elona Dane will have her training here in Cebu under the scrutinizing eyes of Honoridez.

Aside from Elona Dane, the rest of Honoridez’s disciples, majority of them coming from UC, also gears up for several tournaments.

The UC collegiate varsity players will have their hands full with back-to-back tournaments in the offing - the PRISAA National Games in Naga and the national selection in Manila this summer. – Caecent No-ot Magsumbol   (THE FREEMAN)
