Love and sports

FULL POINT - Nimrod NL Quiñones -

CEBU, Philippines -  It’s Valentine’s Day in two days and many seem to still be scrambling on what to do or where to celebrate this weekend.

With more women now into sports, it seems that there are a lot more options now that have totally become romantic.

Here are a few suggestions that you might want to consider.

Among the many sports, one mentions ‘love’ very often and that is tennis. There are a few tennis playing couples that I know like the inseparable Antonino ‘Jun’ San Juan and his wife Maria Chona ‘Marichu’ Jao-San Juan.

The two fell in love while playing volleyball but now you can catch them at the tennis courts of Casino Español which has somewhat become their ‘love’ nest.

There are many other sports that you can share with your partner like Vince and Lucille Colina, who are almost always together at the golf tournaments except when Vince is paired off with his former USC Warriors teammate Bobby Barria hehehe…

I’m sure Lucille doesn’t mind that, but the Colinas are only among the many couples that share the same passion for the game.

There are also couples that go bowling and play badminton together and there are also many football couples that I know of.

To those who have children to watch, sports is also a good way to bond for couples as they laze around the playing fields watching over their children who are playing and at the same time spending some quality time together.

There are the younger couples who enjoy outdoor adventure and those that love the sea and the many sporting activities they can do there.

Sports is not exactly something very unromantic. In fact, love blooms in many sporting arenas.

Just don’t take your partner to some place where they might seem out of place or get scared.

Back in the early 1990’s I took my then girlfriend (now she’s my wife) to watch a judo tournament that I took part in. That was the first and the last time she did as after I hit the mats hard, I busted my lips and was bloodied from the action.

At least she didn’t dump me after that and just told me not to take her to such competition again if I am joining.

Also, guys might want to make sure that they don’t take their partners to watch games where you might end up getting jealous of the star players, who would get most of her attention and she’d forget that you exist.

Sports and romance can mix if done right.

MILESTONE: One of the sportsmen that I admire most is turning another year older tomorrow – dancesport patron and athlete Edward Hayco.

I first met Ed about a decade ago when dancesport caught my interest as one event where we could shine. I wasn’t wrong and now I see Edward and the rest of Team Cebu City Dancesport continuing to spread the interest even to the remote mountain barangays.

I wish Edward many more birthdays and many more champions from his wards. My friend, truly you are one of a kind. More power! (THE FREEMAN)
